Claudio Rocchi’s Lives 🌸

Don’t buy this book as you would buy “a” book… buy it as “the” book, thanking Walter Gatti’s enthusiasm in masterfully describing the ‘70s and Claudio Rocchi, a musician’s musician whose music was the soundtrack of our youth with all the changes of growing-up… a magical time, a magical age 😵‍💫

This book is a well-documented goldmine for everyone who lived and loved in Age of Aquarius.

Buy it, folks 🥇

R.I.P. for Federico Savina 🌸

“Unfortunately Federico Savina passed away yesterday, unknown to most, he still remains an important figure in the history of recording in Italy.

I spent a couple of hours chatting with him during the Lago Film Fest a few years ago about what our work was like in his time, sorry for having sometimes neglected the family for this.

He specialized in film music recordings for which he had several awards, working with the greatest directors and musicians in Italy and he told me about the live recordings he made with the orchestra, in which he followed with the volume sliders the forte and piano of the score following the director's instructions. In those days the volume controls were knobs to turn and he compared his thumb / forefinger to mine to point out that his two fingers were deformed from use…”

Thanks to Stefano Castagna for sharing the above and R.I.P. to Mr. Savina and condolences to his family

Goto Unit/Royal Sound Amarcord

Regarding the similarity of the Gotos with the Pioneers... the story goes that the old Goto had disassembled and repaired an old pair of 38cm TAD (Pioneer...) already in the 60s which he then resumed and dramatically increased in size of the magnets and consequently the magnetic flux... unlike Koizumi-san (Onken) who took the 416 and 515 as a model for his woofers, Goto did so...

Seija Goto-san (R) and Shinichi Tanaka-san (L) - his trusty agent for non-Japanese markets - with some SG 146LD bass-drivers

The horns you see in the photos are the 150B, depth (length) 125cm + driver, while mine are the 150, 142cm deep, to be used with the "old" small throat mid-bass drivers (SG-555PS , in my case)...

I cut down to 180hz, instead of 220hz... frankly, even messing around wildly in a closet like mine, I can't hear delays or "strange" diffractions... if anything, I run into big problems to assemble a harmonic and functional whole, given the weights and dimensions... but even with the unpresentable mess of these days, the sound is incredibly alive and detailed, even if comparing everything with the excellent, adored Jabo... I don't exclude that I could - one day - take home a couple of SG-146DLs, to finally free myself from the slowness of paper woofers... but then horns would really become a nightmare... at least in my environment.

.

“Look at that dot again. It's here. It's home. We are. On it, everyone you love, everyone you've ever heard of, every human being who ever lived lived their lives.

The sum total of our joys and sorrows, a thousand presumptuous religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and gatherer, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and subject, every young couple in love, every mother and father , hopeful son, inventor and explorer, every preacher of morality, every corrupt politician, every "superstar", every "supreme commander", every saint and sinner in the history of our species has lived there on a speck of dust suspended within a beam of Sun.

Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood shed by all those generals and emperors that, in glory and triumph, they might become the momentary lords of a fraction of a point.

Think of the endless cruelties meted out by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel to the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager to kill each other, how fervent their hatreds. Our fancies, our imagined self-worth, the illusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.

Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our darkness, in all this vastness, there is no indication that help can come from anywhere else to save us from ourselves.

Earth is the only known world that can host life. There is no other place, at least in the foreseeable future, where our species can migrate. Visit, yes. Living, not yet. Whether you like it or not, for now the Earth is where we play our cards. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience.

There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human vanities than this distant image of our tiny world. For me, it underscores our responsibility to care more kindly for one another, and to preserve and protect the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known. ❤️

Analogtechnik at Munich Hi End 2023

Daniel Kim of Analogtechnik’s fame will be showcasing his AMAZING, AWESOME handmade creations at next upcoming audio fair, hosted at the Shrine, AKA Silbatone auditorium.

He’ll be bringing the new updated model of DMT25 and DST15 La Scala: the new models will be using mammoth ivory cantilevers and - of course - meteorite iron pole pieces!

If attending to Munchen’s audio fair, not only be captured by ultra-esoteric Western Electric’s and Silbatone’s but also pay attention to this gentle, skilled, sweet artisan and his miniature masterpieces.

Analogtechnik’s is best kept secret in audio… Daniel’s cartridges changed my own and several others musical-lives!

I wish Daniel’s the success he deserves without never sacrificing “quality” to “stardom”.

AGFA PER528

A new old stock, never used, premium studio AGFA PER528 1/4” tape is a quite a eare find, these days.

My tape of choice, the VERY best: you cannot compare a recording on this tape to shitty, crappy, wannabe actually mass-produced tapes 🤮
