Pandit Pran Nath 💫

•• Remembering Legendary Hindustani Classical Vocalist and Guru Pandit Pran Nath on his 108th Birth Anniversary (3 November 1918 – 13 June 1996) ••

Pandit Pran Nath was a distinguished Hindustani classical vocalist and one of the foremost exponents of the Kirana Gharana of Indian classical music.

Born in Lahore, he developed an early passion for music and began his rigorous musical training under the legendary Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan Sahib, dedicating nearly twenty years to learning from his guru.

Renowned for his profound understanding of ragas, impeccable intonation (Sur) and meditative, slow-paced elaboration of the alap, Panditji remained a staunch custodian of the traditional Kirana style. He served as a teacher of Hindustani classical music at the University of Delhi from 1960 to 1970.

In 1970, he travelled to the United States, where he introduced Western audiences to the depth and intricacies of Hindustani vocal music. He subsequently established the Kirana Center for Indian Classical Music in New York. His disciples included influential American minimalist composers La Monte Young and Terry Riley, among others.

Remembered for his uncompromising dedication to musical tradition, spiritual approach to raga and extraordinary contribution to the international appreciation of Indian classical music, Pandit Pran Nath occupies a unique place in the history of Hindustani music.

On his Birth Anniversary, Hindustani Classical Music And Everything pays rich tributes to the legend and are very grateful for his contributions to the Hindustani Classical Music.
