Disk of the month - Paul Bley/Gary Peacock - Mindset 💫

Paul Bley and Gary Peacock have played together since the 1960s ---- their duo recordings are the epitome of communication in the moment --- MINDSET is a 1997 recording.

Listen to all 14 tracks  in sequence, as the musicians intended.  Recorded for Giovanni Bonandrini's Soul Note Records and video synthesis cover by Carol Goss.

A reference recording, too 💫

Transatlantic Records 💫

Transatlantic Records image

British independent label, established in 1961 by Nat Josephs

a subsidiary of Transatlantic Records Ltd.. The common publishing

company is the subsidiary Heathside Music Ltd..

Releases from the 60s have the purple and white, rough structured labels. First design had a purple round globe, stating 'Transatlantic Records'. In 1966 the design changed to a white globe in a purple square, with just a 't' next to it. Shortly after that, the globe was aligned around the spindle hole.

In the early 70s, the label design changed again, to the multicolored and black and white 'Globe' label, which had several color variations.

In 1975, Joseph sold a 75% share of his company to Sidney Bernstein's Granada Group and the company became part of Granada. Two years later Granada sold its share to the Marshall Cavendish publishing company, which also acquired Joseph's 25% share. The new company was renamed Logo Records. In the 1990s Logo Records and the Transatlantic Records catalogue was sold to Castle Communications PLC, which was in turn taken over taken over by Sanctuary Records Group Ltd. in 1999, which itself was taken over by Universal Music Group in 2007.

Tools of the trade - Robert Wyatt’s Riviera portable organ (made in Italy) 💫

ROBERT WYATT / RIVIERA ORGAN:

This little transistor organ is responsible for Robert's ethereal keyboard sounds starting back on "Rock Bottom" and "Ruth is Stranger than Richard", two truly amazing albums by Mr.

Wyatt.

It has such a soft and mystical sound that was a perfect instrument to accompany Robert's fragile and heartfelt vocals. Robert is an amazing songwriter, one of a kind and his music is a treasure.

It was a gift - shortly after the accident which forced Robert on wheel-chair - by his beloved Alfreda “Alfie” Benge while the couple was in Venice, Italy.

A (reportedly) sometimes annoyed Robert began writing the music of “Rock Bottom” lulled by the lapping of the canal water, clearly audible from the apartment in Giudecca, Venice where he lived - while Alfie was after a movie shooting in Venice…

The result was a timeless masterpiece... thanking RW’s magical compositions.

Tools of the trade - Ravi Shankar’s sitar(s) 💫

Here Anoushka Shankar plays her father's sitar for the last time before it entered to the collections of Prestigious British Museum, it was gifted & donated by Ravi Shankar Foundation, 2017.

Pt.Ravi Shankar made many sitars for him in his whole career of music, his first sitar for performing was made by Kanailal & Brothers from Calcutta which is now kept in a display somewhere in London, on other hand he made 6 Sitars from Nodu Mallick, who was a Painter & sculptor, who shifted then to making sitar & music, also Nodu accompanied Shankar on his tours in Europe USA Middle East countries & many other places till his demise in 1988, Nodu made 6 Sitars for him, after he learned & took inspiration from Kanailal & Brothers, this particular one was from 1961, the sitar on which he performed at Monterey & Woodstock was made for his Disciple Amiya Dasgupta in 58, who was again a friend of Nodu & then Ravi ji switched & exchanged his Another Nodu sitar with Amiya ji, making it his & performed everywhere, the Sitar was very special with its Ornamental work, size, tonal quality, weight & everything, almost Nodu made exact same sitar's but difference lied on the designs (inlays) & tone also the sizes! & then his SITARs were made by the Rikhiram & sons in Delhi.

Western Electric TA-7331 💫

I will explain about Western's TA7331 baffle.

It is not an enclosure. It is a baffle.

It is a front-rear open baffle. There is no other one, so it will be difficult to understand if I explain it, so I will explain it.

There is a partition board in the center of the doghouse, and the woofer is attached to that board 😊

In front of the woofer is a front-open baffle. Behind the woofer is a rear-open baffle.

The back side has a cloth louver 😊

This is a replica that reproduces the Western drawing exactly.

The drawing is attached ✨

This time, the woofer is not fixed to the baffle in order to prevent the vibration of the woofer unit frame, which is my recent theme, from being transmitted to the baffle. The woofer is placed on the original cast frame and fixed to the floor 1 mm in front of the baffle.

I'm doing something unusual, so I'm sure you won't understand, but thank you for your help.

It is common sense at Western, but it's not well known, so it can't be helped.

The sound is adjusted to the frequency according to the Western manual for the movie theater at that time. Both the bass and treble are subdued.

At the time, movie theaters didn't use deep bass or ultra-high frequencies because they were too noisy. There are still movie theaters that do the same thing. I think it's to increase the clarity of the movie dialogue 😊

Even in the Altec era, the most important thing is the voice, as theaters called the Voice of the Theater and theater speakers. In fact, many actors have voices that are difficult to hear. The voices of male actors such as Beat Takeshi and Takakura Ken are difficult to hear 😆

Arigato gozaimashita, Kiichiro-san 🙏

Holy Grail 💫

I don't see a cord or an amp: where is all this amazing sound coming from? Can't be just this one guitar, can it?

Unbelievable!!

Thanks to Eric Schoenberg for his impeccable good taste and dedication to these amazing instruments 💎
