The Theorbo is a large string instrument from the lute family.
Originating in Italy, it was mainly used from the 16th to the 18th century for song accompaniments and basso continuo parts.
It was used primarily to accompany operas and songs. It fell into disuse in the 17th century, but was revived by historical music movements beginning in the 1960s.
