Monica Zetterlund

 

Born Eva Monica Nilsson (20 September 1937 – 12 May 2005) was a Swedish singer particularly noted for her jazz work.

She began by learning the classic jazz songs from radio and records, initially not knowing the language and what they sang about in English. Hit songs included "Sakta vi gå genom stan" (Swedish cover of "Walking My Baby Back Home"; in Swedish a tribute to Stockholm town), "Visa från Utanmyra", "Sista jäntan", "Trubbel", "Gröna små äpplen" ("Little Green Apples"), "Monicas vals" ("Waltz for Debby"), "Stick iväg, Jack!" ("Hit the Road Jack"), "Att angöra en brygga", "Var blev ni av", "Måne över Stureplan" (cover of Sting's "Moon Over Bourbon Street") and "Under vinrankan!", among many, many others.

She also interpreted the works of such Swedish singer-songwriters as Evert Taube, Olle Adolphson and Povel Ramel, and all through her life interpreted the works of international and American jazz musicians/song writers. She worked with some of the greatest international jazz names including Louis Armstrong, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Steve Kuhn and Quincy Jones, and in the Scandinavian jazz world with people like Georg Riedel, Egil Johansen, Arne Domnérus, Svend Asmussen and Jan Johansson.

In 1964 she recorded the critically acclaimed jazz album Waltz for Debby with Bill Evans, a record she herself described as "the best I've done" and was most proud of. Her long career also included the song "En gång i Stockholm" ("Winter City"); a jazz ballad with which she represented Sweden in the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest. She finished last, however (mainly because the song genre was not suitable for the competition) and scored the infamous nul points, but still managed to remain successful in Sweden. Her collaboration with the comic duo Hasse & Tage (in the 1960s and 70s) eventually led to a stage career in revues and films. Memorable are her parts in films Att angöra en brygga, Äppelkriget and Jan Troell's Utvandrarna (aka The Emigrants; with Liv Ullman and Max von Sydow in the leads) for which Zetterlund received a Guldbagge Award for Best Supporting Actress. She appeared in more than 20 films and television series throughout her life.

One of the highlights of the King Crimson 50th anniversary CD/Blu-Ray editions to date has been King Crimson producer David Singleton’s series of Elemental Mixes as he utilises the full spectrum of available studio sessions for each album to produce very different takes on the familiar songs and pieces.

 

This is especially true of Lizard where the ambition of the material, the much-expanded line-up of musicians - the background of many of them in the jazz rather than the rock world - and the number of takes recorded, resulted in a large amount of material to be considered for this album.

 

There was enough material for David to be able to mix and produce alternate takes for every piece from the original album.

 

As well as giving great insight into the recordings, the nature of Elemental Mixes allows for different takes from individual musicians to be included – sometimes alongside one another - in a way that would never be considered in the formulation of the original album.

 

David comments that “When I was working on the Elemental mixes, I jokingly described them as ‘Lizard for those who don’t like Lizard’. They were a complete revelation. Lizard is the one album which, in its initial incarnation, never quite convinced me. And yet these Elemental mixes, with their opportunity to look ‘under the hood’ of the album, revealed something fresh, wonderful and astonishing. So, if you are a King Crimson fan, who like me, has never quite taken Lizard to your heart, then these are essential listening. And hopefully equally fascinating to those who already love the album”.

 

Presented as a single 200gram LP and including the complete album in Elemental Mixes form, running in the same sequence as the original album, this release showcases Lizard in a very different manner to how it’s previously been heard.

Anechoic 💫

 

At Microsoft's Redmond headquarters, there's an anechoic chamber certified by Guinness World Records as the "quietest place in the world." Its background noise has been measured at approximately -20.6 A-weighted decibels, well below the conventional threshold of hearing.

In this space, sensations become unusual: many visitors report clearly hearing their heartbeat or the creaking of joints. Staying there for long periods can be unpleasant, so much so that not everyone can last more than a few minutes.

The chamber was designed for device testing: here, engineers analyze the most subtle sounds from Surface, HoloLens, and other products, free from any external interference. The soundproofing doesn't silence the loudest noises, but attenuates them to surprising levels.

Beyond its technical function, this unique environment demonstrates how sound influences our perception. In an acoustic vacuum, the inner world appears louder than the outside.

RIP for Paolo ❤️

 

Indifference is more culpable than violence itself.

The mother of Paolo Mendico, the 14-year-old who committed suicide in Latina, recounts the pain and loneliness experienced by her son and his family.

"My son was different from everyone else because he was a pure, pure boy; he didn't swear," his mother says.

"Some teachers even called my son a good-natured boy because they heard him intervene in class when a classmate said inappropriate words. He was immediately alarmed. Perhaps his very spontaneous way of being annoyed his peers, who weren't like that at all: they were disrespectful."

She then recounts the silence at the funeral: "There was no one there. There was only one boy with whom he got along very well, because he was polite just like him. When my son was absent due to illness, he was the only one who gave him his homework. But still, there was no one at the funeral, not even the parents, no one."

With this provocative phrase, a banker shook the world of economics. His words, both biting and ironic, were thought-provoking:

“A cyclist is a real catastrophe for the country's economy. He doesn't buy cars, he doesn't borrow to pay for them. He doesn't take out insurance. He doesn't refuel, he doesn't pay for service, maintenance, or repairs. He doesn't need paid parking, he doesn't cause serious accidents. He doesn't advocate for the construction of endless highways. And, even more seriously, he doesn't gain weight.

A healthy citizen is of no use to the economic system. He doesn't consume drugs, he doesn't crowd hospitals or clinics, he doesn't contribute to the GDP with his illnesses. He's useless.

On the contrary, every new McDonald's creates at least thirty jobs: ten cardiologists, ten dentists, ten dieticians and nutritionists... in addition, of course, to those who work in the restaurant itself.”

So, the cutting question: would you choose a bicycle or a McDonald's?

It's worth thinking about. Because behind the paradox lies a bitter truth: in a world where health doesn't drive the economy, being healthy is almost a revolutionary act.

Oh, I forgot: walking is even worse. Pedestrians don't even buy bikes.

So: let’s fuck up this (wrong) planet… cycling could prove to be enough 💫😏🍀😏💫

Martin Carthy - aging, frailty and dexterity 💫💎💫

 

Sir Martin Carthy (MBE) recently released this disc and it’s a master in his 84+ who re-recorded among his most iconic songs: it’s both reassuring - art resists to aging - and frightening as, while the sound of his acoustic guitar is - truly - masterfully & faithfully recorded (at home), his playing, his legendary fingerpicking is very “simplified”, almost distilled to its essence (yet, discomfort arise vs. original, vintage, ever-changing rhythmic versions) and so slow, soooo slow and voice so fragile and trembling and both unequivocally show the inexorable curve of life that withers… BUT, hey! he’s “still” Martin Carthy, ‘til his last breathe 💫💎💫💎

… it’s so sad, yet it’s so honest and sincere.

All the best to Martin Carthy and thanks for being a soundtrack of my life.
