I’m Free 💫

I handled this early ECM’s disc infinite times in the past decades - always attracted by the genius cover-art and amazing musicians, yet worried about the music - so, I never bought it, until I recently read a review about it.

It’s never too late: what a superb disc and - silly me - I admit I love these peeling off, 50+ years old, yellowing, gently abused covers, more than I appreciate the recent Luminessence reissues.

Thanks a lot, Alun.

  1. Aha -- you got a copy! Enjoy. I'll give it a play soon but it will have to wait -- a clutch of absolutely pristine OJC reissues from the early-80s just came my way and I'm working through them. They were that increasingly rare thing: a bargain!

  2. Stefano, I just happened across a post on the FB ECM Records group by a musician called Jan Opsted who said of this record: "I asked Evan [Parker] about this album. Fascinating early ECM release. Apparently it was recorded in a squat. Manfred wasn’t present for the recording. [...]"

Obviously I can't vouch for its veracity but that it might have been recorded in a squat seems to fit in well with those early, fabled days of the English free music scene...
